Sportsman Cap & Bag, Shawnee, Kan., recently had employees gather to celebrate the memory of company founder Abe Yeddis on what would have been his 100th birthday.

Yeddis and his father founded the company more than 80 years ago. Today, Yeddis’s grandson, Dan Saferstein, runs the company. He also employs his brothers, Jon and Phil Saferstein, and his uncle, Bruce Blackman.

“My grandfather and the way he ran this business were very inspirational to me, especially when I took over,” Dan Saferstein says. “He had a clear vision and wasn’t afraid of change. And that’s how I try to run the business now.”

Sportsman Cap & Bag began in Kansas City, Mo., on New Year’s Day in 1937 as Pioneer Cap Co. During the following decades, Yeddis strategically turned that initial investment into a thriving company.

Dan Saferstein joined the family business in the 1990s. At a time when any available space becomes a canvas for personal expression, he saw a growth industry in providing blank caps ready for team symbols, corporate logos or other designs, according to the company.

Today, Sportsman Cap & Bag is a cooperative of headwear manufacturers and distributors unified under a network banner, enabling a large collection of brands in one place for wholesalers. — J.L.
