June 7, 2017

Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA), Fairfax, Va., recently announced its supplier members have donated nearly $40,000 in prizes for the 2017 SkillsUSA Championship.

Contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations and labor organizations, and competencies are set by industry. Students participate in either the secondary (high school or vocational school) or post-secondary school (college, technical school, etc.) divisions.

Johnny Shell, vice president of technical services, SGIA, chairs the committees that oversee the screen-printing technology and graphic imaging/sublimation competitions. Industry volunteers serve as judges.

“We participate in SkillsUSA because it helps cultivate our industry’s future workforce, and it helps educators and students become aware of the opportunities our industry provides,” Shell says. “We’ve even seen the competitions lead to jobs for some of the students.”

SGIA members participating as volunteers or donating prizes include: BBC Industries/Black Body, ChromaLuxe/Unisub, Condé Systems Inc., Easiway Systems Inc., GraphicElephants.com, Great Dane Graphics, International Coatings Inc., KIWO Inc. (Kissel & Wolf GmbH), The M&R Cos., NEWMAN ROLLER FRAMES mfg. by Stretch Devices Inc., PolyOne Corp., Ryonet Corp., Sawgrass, StahlsTV.com, Vapor Apparel and Vastex Intl. Inc.

“Students train year round for the opportunity to compete, and we would not be able to run the competition for these dedicated students without the help from donors,” Shell adds. — J.L.
