FULL STORYGildan Activewear Inc., Montreal, has announced it plans to close its Hildebran, N.C., facility and lay off all manufacturing workers at the location, according to a report by The News Herald in Morganton, N.C.
The company officially made the announcement last week, in addition to sending a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act Notice to Burke County officials.
The notice indicated the pending layoffs will affect all 100 manufacturing employees at the Hildebran facility, beginning Sept. 13. The facility’s office also will close.
“We regret the impact this decision is having on the employees and their families in the community,” says Garry Bell, vice president of corporate communications for Gildan. “But it really is a response to changes in the marketplace.”
Bell says the closing is a result of decreased demand for products made at the Hildebran facility. A portion of the decreased demand can be attributed to an increase in demand in the marketplace for less expensive polyester imports, according to the company.
Gildan’s human resources teams are looking at relocation possibilities for its manufacturing and office administration employees.
The Rapid Response Team within the N.C. Department of Commerce was notified so it can assist workers. The notice also said employees can apply for open positions at other Gildan locations. — D.S.
