HRC T-Shirt Series Supports LGBT CommunitySeptember 14, 2011Musicians, artists and designers are lending their faces and voices to Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) newest limited-edition T-shirt series to help raise awareness about equality. Photographer iO Tillett Wright’s “Self Evident Truths” project is a photographic documentation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community across 25 cities. “The concept behind Self Evident Truths is simple; it's impossible to deny the humanity in a face,” Wright says. “We are all human, we all have hearts and emotions and eyes that speak to them, whether we're gay, straight, bisexual, transgender, black, white, Latino, Asian …You get the picture.” Wright began the project last spring, shooting 300 portraits in New York on 35 mm film in black and white, in natural light without any makeup or styling. She now hopes to expand her project nationally, with as many as 5,000 people. To help advance the project, HRC will release T-shirts featuring musicians Tegan Quin from Tegan and Sara, JD Samson from MEN and Bianca Casady from CocoRosie; artist Terence Koh; and designer Robert Tagliapietra from Costello Tagliapietra. The unisex T-shirts will sell for $29, and $5 from each shirt will go directly to the Self Evident Truths project. Only 250 of each limited-edition T-shirt will be produced.
