An Impressions reader recently submitted a suggestion for easing the process when making your own patches. Trim away the excess material (leaving a doubled tearaway backing) after the outline stitch and before the satin finishing stitch. This way, you just need to pull the finished patch from the backing when it is finished and you don't have to worry about cutting your satin stitches.
The only thing to be mindful of is burning or cutting the fuzz from the backing away from the edges.
The word “appliqué” is derived from the French term for “applied.” As a decorating technique, appliqué has been popular for centuries — and was particularly useful for mending clothes and presenting a bold image, such as those on flags or banners. Recently, it has enjoyed a long run of popularity, particularly in reverse and distressed treatments on ready-to-wear clothing.
